The Cincinnati Reds need a new pitching script against a club that already read the old one. The Los Angeles Dodgers arrive shorthanded, but their hitters have a fresh memory of where Lowder missed.
Lowder has adjustments to make, not time to waste
The Reds are operating in spoiler and evaluation mode, with younger players receiving meaningful September work alongside the established veterans. That makes Rhett Lowder’s listed start important beyond the standings, but this is a stern classroom.
The Dodgers reached Lowder early in their meeting six days ago, then drove him out with a major fourth-inning rally. His previous two opponents had also made him work, so the concern cannot be filed away as one crooked inning.
Lowder’s best version keeps the sinker below barrels and lets the changeup play off the same lane. Last week, his fastballs leaked into damage areas and the Dodgers refused to chase often enough to let him escape.
Elly De La Cruz remains the Reds’ most dangerous counterpunch after homering off Yamamoto in the previous matchup. Matt McLain, however, is day to day with a sore left shoulder, while Spencer Steer is expected to miss the remainder of the season, as detailed by mlb.com.
The Reds’ relief picture also carries mileage questions. Brandon Williamson recently supplied a long outing, Emilio Pagán worked on consecutive days over the weekend, and availability for this game depends heavily on bullpen usage in the series opener.
Yamamoto gives the Dodgers length and a deeper pitch map
The Dodgers remain focused on the NL West race, a postseason berth and positioning for a first-round bye. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is listed to start after working deep against the Reds last week, matching his MLB career high in strikeouts and allowing only De La Cruz’s solo homer.
His splitter is no longer reserved for chase counts. Yamamoto now throws it early, in neutral counts and even from behind, then folds in four-seamers, sinkers, cutters and curves from similar tunnels.
The Dodgers will be without Shohei Ohtani, who did not travel while dealing with left-knee and right-biceps problems, according to mlb.com. Freddie Freeman is day to day with right-knee soreness, and Miguel Rojas’ recurring shoulder trouble also clouds his availability, per the Los Angeles Times.
That still leaves Mookie Betts, Teoscar Hernández, Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy to pressure Lowder from both sides of the plate. Josue De Paula adds another patient bat after producing a homer and a double for his first two major-league hits.
The late innings have been less convincing than the lineup. Defensive mistakes contributed to Sunday’s collapse in Miami, while Tanner Scott and Brock Stewart failed to protect the lead, which makes Yamamoto’s ability to cover innings especially useful.
Warm air and short dimensions punish a sinker left up
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET at Great American Ball Park, with temperatures around 88–90°F and little rain threat. The game will begin in daylight and move through dusk under the lights.
The park’s compact foul lines and power alleys offer little forgiveness for elevated contact. A light inward breeze may provide modest resistance, but a thigh-high sinker still needs no invitation to leave in warm air.
Fresh eyes, short fences and a five-run target
The cleanest angle is the Dodgers’ team total. Lowder must alter his sequencing immediately because Betts and company have just seen his release, pitch shapes and preferred fastball locations.
If Lowder falls behind and returns to predictable heaters, the Dodgers can create traffic before the Reds reach their uncertain relief plan. An early exit would expose a bullpen whose length and late-inning availability may already have been affected by the opener.
Yamamoto’s matchup and the Dodgers’ own bullpen problems do not need to cooperate with this wager. The task is simply for the Dodgers’ offense to turn its fresh scouting report into at least five runs, and the park gives every elevated mistake a little extra carry.
Ohtani’s absence and Freeman’s uncertain knee reduce the lineup’s ceiling. The remaining Dodgers still offer enough barrel contact and platoon pressure to exploit another loose fastball plan from Lowder.
