The White Sox can make Jones work for every out
The White Sox have dropped the first two games of the series, often finding their offense after the Pirates had already taken control. Their September stakes remain substantial, with little room to give away another home game in the American League Central race.
mlb.com lists Hagen Smith as the probable starter, but his workload remains in doubt. The left-hander has been developed as a short-burst reliever since returning from a shoulder impingement, making an opener assignment more likely than a conventional turn through the rotation.
Smith’s raised arm slot and diving slider make him difficult to square up when he gets ahead. The uncertain bridge behind him is the issue, although Grant Taylor, Bryan Hudson and Jordan Hicks were all kept out of Wednesday’s game and give the White Sox a fresher late-inning core.
The White Sox can stack left-handed bats against Jones, with Munetaka Murakami, Andrew Benintendi, Colson Montgomery, Tristan Peters and Sam Antonacci among the available options. That group does not need to chase early; deep counts are useful currency against a starter whose club badly needs length.
Jones carries the bullpen plan in his right arm
Jared Jones is listed to start for the Pirates after his strongest recent outing, a scoreless performance against the Angels. His fastball and slider can miss bats at a high level, but his recent stretch has also included lost velocity, uneven command and inefficient counts.
Jones missed last season following right-elbow surgery, and the Pirates have acknowledged workload concerns around their young pitchers. There is no reported restriction for this start, but the coaching staff has reason to avoid stretching him recklessly if the White Sox force long at-bats.
Pittsburgh used eight relievers Wednesday after opening with Lake Bachar and turning to Brandon Eisert for bulk innings. Camilo Doval had a stressful appearance, while Luke Weaver and Mason Montgomery also handled meaningful late work, leaving very few clean options if Jones exits early.
The Pirates have won the first two games through different methods: early barrel contact in the opener, then bullpen sequencing and rally-killing defense on Wednesday. That versatility has powered a sustained series-winning run, but the narrow postseason path still demands another result.
Twilight, mild air and no weather detour
First pitch at Rate Field is scheduled for 7:40 PM ET, with temperatures around 72–73°F and essentially no rain threat. The game begins in twilight before moving quickly into full darkness.
An east-northeast breeze around 5–6 mph should act mainly as a light crosswind or slight inward push from right-center. It may shave a little carry from marginal fly balls, so the cleaner scoring route is sustained traffic against tired arms rather than waiting for cheap home runs.
Four White Sox runs are within the bullpen’s fault line
The assignment is plain in the notebook: make Jones throw pitches, get him out before the late innings and attack what follows. His command has wobbled often enough that a left-heavy White Sox order can create traffic even before the depleted Pirates bullpen enters.
If Jones lasts deep, Pittsburgh can keep its tired relievers out of sight and lean on the same defense that controlled Wednesday’s rallies. If he does not, the White Sox will see either lower-priority arms or relievers working on consecutive nights, which is the clearest route to the required fourth run.
Jones’ rebound outing is the main danger to the bet, particularly if his slider finishes below the barrel and his fastball gets ahead of younger hitters. Efficient early innings would protect Pittsburgh’s most exposed unit.
